Girl Scouts Newest Leadership Journey, It's Your Planet - Love It! PDF Print E-mail

Girls are being exposed to ideas and discussions on the environment every day and every where. Girl Scouts journeys are packed with the latest research and girl-relevant environmental thinking and offer adults a way to interact with girls on topics of great importance in their lives. In this journey series, girls at each grade level have an opportunity to learn about grade-appropriate environmental issues such as clean water and air, noise pollution, global warming, soil contamination, and agricultural processes.

Journey Awards

Awards are a vital part of the Girl Scout experience, and adults can assist girls in finding the best way to achieve their goals. In a Girl Scout journey, awards link the experiences, discussions, and ideas that girls explore together. As girls progress through the levels from Daisy to Ambassador, their awards signify attaining new and higher levels of knowledge and skills, and ultimately a deeper understanding of what it means to be a leader who makes a difference in the world.

There are helpful tools and surprises too!- In several of the Girl Scout journeys, there are some special items: designated pages for copying, surveys for the girls to use, and help involving families and more.

Daisy- Between Earth and Sky
This journey presents Kindergarten and first graders the opportunity to earn three awards. Girls consider their feelings and skills and then take into account the feelings and skills of those around them. The girls then move on to engage their larger community and then they move out into their community to "do."-The Blue Bucket, Firefly and Clover Awards.

Brownies- WOW! Wonders of Water
The WOW! journey presents second and third graders the opportunity to earn four awards. Girls begin with small, personal acts and then move out to purposeful teamwork that engages the larger community and influences its members in significant ways.- Love Water, Save Water, Share Water, WOW!

Junior- Get Moving!
Fourth and fifth graders get a chance to earn three Girl Scout leadership awards—Energize, Investigate, and Innovate. Girls will explore their own energy, the energy in their places and spaces (buildings), and the energy of getting from here to there (transportation). They'll see how the awards join together to create an energizing effect in their community as they investigate energy use in a community building and suggest ways to make it more energy-efficient, create a plan, and carry it out, and all the while reaching out to others to join in, too!

Cadette- Breathe
Girls six through eighth grade will have the opportunity to learn to assess air quality inside and out, getting an aerial view of everything from cigarette smoking to noise in the air to deforestation. Cadettes will engage themselves in improving the world's air quality while also supporting and nourishing their own abilities as leaders who are aware, alert, and able to affirm all they do.

Senior- Sow What?
Ninth and tenth grade girls understand who they are and what they stand for, and they care about others, too. They can grasp an issue by the roots and organize a team to work together to sow the seeds of sustainable change. Girls will identify, and dig into, a food or land issue, tap into some community experts as they strive for a sustainable impact as they execute their plan and advocating their influence.

Ambassadors- Justice
These girls will become ambassadors of enviornmental justice as they participate in activities and explore justice (and injustice) from many angles including science, decision making and even doing a little math! Girls in eleventh and twelfth grade come to understand and advocate Justice—for Earth and all its inhabitants as they create and then present their own unique equation for what justice asks of us.
